In 1959 as an offshoot of a public commission to design furnishings for the 'Carimate Golf Club', his simple chair became a popular icon of design into the 1960's. The chair changed the course of his career. The Carimate chair soon became a familiar sight in restaurants and cafes throughout Italy and Europe.

What Vico Magistretti had to say about his design: "Cesare Cassina, a very clever man, once came to visit me at my studio and asked me if he could manufacture the first piece I had designed for the 'Triennale' and which was produced by Terence Conrad in England. It was a chair designed for the golf club house near Milan, in Carimate, and that's where the name of the chair comes from."
