Description of duties
Responsible to the Offender Learning Regional Manager, principal accountabilities:
*To work with the off-site Offender Learning Contract Management Team, the Head of Learning and Skills, the Learning and Skills Council, the Prison Management team and other key stakeholders to determine the overall direction and strategic purpose of education within the prison in response to the requirements of the OLASS Contract.
*To formulate and monitor an implementation strategy which ensures that the prison Education Department achieves its purpose in line with the agreed OLASS Delivery Plan, the College strategic and development plans, LSC and Prison requirements and those of other key stakeholders.
*To lead staff in active engagement in the College and the Prison Quality Improvement procedures to support the Quality Improvement process across the establishment.
*To manage the deployment of physical and human resources to meet the requirements of the implementation strategy.
*To participate in the recruitment of staff to the prison Education Department.
*To manage, support, and develop education staff so that they are able to take responsibility for and deliver high quality provision.
*To optimise learner success by providing high quality learner experiences.
*To support the development of links with community provision and employers to support offenders progression through the gate into sustainable work and mainstream education.
*To develop strategies to achieve the highest possible standards of service, including ensuring that staff have access to opportunities for professional development.
*To ensure that learners "Skills for Life" are fully integrated into the learner programmes.
*To work collaboratively with colleagues across the organisation to promote the sharing of good practice.
*To teach for up to 130 hours per year.
*To exercise effective control of the finances and budgets allocated to the Education Department in line with College and LSC regulations.
*To provide management information as requested by, the LSC, the Offender Learning Regional Manager and Prison Authorities.
Experience / Qualifications
The post holder will:
*Have a degree or equivalent vocational qualification
*Hold a full teaching qualification (PGCE or Cert Ed) and ideally relevant assessor/verifier awards
*Have proven experience of teaching and/or relevant commercial experience
*Be able to teach creatively, adapting to the needs of a variety of students, and be willing to explore new teaching and learning strategies
*Have a proven track record in managing teams
*Possess good "Skills for Life" and be willing to develop these further.
*Need experience of working within a Prison or custodial environment
*Possess the ability to manage possible tensions arising from this management level role
*Need a keen interest in and an understanding of student-centred learning within the context of a prison
